Our Need for Control

The Golden Calf is a classic story in biblical history. The Israelites have just been rescued from hundreds of years of slavery in Egypt and they have finally met with God at His mountain and Moses has gone up to meet directly with God. Israel grows impatient, and resorts to their old bad habits and so quickly turns from this great God who has rescued them to an image made of gold and wood. Their desire for control and fear of the unknown paved a path of idolatry and abandoning their great God. Part of what makes this story so classic is thousands of years later, we are still doing the same thing, just in a different context.
